Vietnamese Bananas and Mangoes Reign Supreme in AEON Hong Kong Supermarkets

22/10/2024

AEON supermarkets in Hong Kong have switched to importing 100% of their bananas and mangoes from Vietnam, replacing previous sources from the Philippines, Taiwan, and Thailand.

Mr. Yuichiro Shiotani, General Director of AEON Topvalu Vietnam Co., Ltd., said that high quality and sustainable production processes are the reasons why AEON chooses Vietnamese fruit.

Prioritizing "Green"

According to Mr. Shiotani, banana production in Vietnam applies a circular economy model, generating no waste to the environment, meeting AEON's sustainable development criteria. Current consumer trends require products that are not only competitively priced but also environmentally friendly and delivered quickly. These are the strengths that Vietnamese suppliers are demonstrating.

Demand from Major Markets

Not only AEON, but many other international retailers are also increasing imports of Vietnamese goods. Mr. Mirash Basheer, Director of May Exports Vietnam (Lulu Group - India), said that the demand for "green" products from Vietnam, especially cashews, is increasing.

Lulu Group is also interested in other products such as fruit juice, coconut water, and canned tuna, with the desire to bring Vietnamese goods to a higher-end segment.

US Market: Potential and Challenges

In the US market, Walmart currently cooperates with about 500 businesses, but mainly FDI enterprises. To access this market, Vietnamese businesses need to meet strict standards of quality, price, and especially the "green" and sustainable factors.

Mr. Do Ngoc Hung, Vietnamese Trade Counselor in the US, recommends that Vietnamese businesses proactively learn about the criteria of large distributors such as Walmart, Costco, and Amazon. Building an efficient supply chain, connecting with industry associations, and participating in exhibitions and trade fairs are ways to enhance competitiveness.
