European Union introduced 3 new countervailing investigations in the first half of 2022

According to the Semi-annual Report under Article 25.11 of the Agreement produced by the WTO Committee on Subsidies and Countervailing Measures, in the first half of the 2022, the report reveals that the EU initiated 3 new original investigations, covering optical fibre cables and certain graphite electrode systems from China, stainless steel cold-rolled flat products from India and Indonesia, and fatty acid from Indonesia

According to the Semi-annual Report under Article 25.11 of the Agreement produced by the WTO Committee on Subsidies and Countervailing Measures, in the first half of the 2022, the report reveals that the EU initiated 3 new original investigations, covering optical fibre cables and certain graphite electrode systems from China, stainless steel cold-rolled flat products from India and Indonesia, and fatty acid from Indonesia. Countervailing actions as a result by the EU included duties ranging from 5.1% - 10.3% for China’s fibre cables products effective from Jan 19 2022, 4.3% - 7.5% for mentioned steel products from India but upto 21.4% for the same goods from Indonesia.

Meanwhile, the EU reviewed 13 other cases from 4 partners (China, Egypt, India, Turkiye), of which only one investigation was terminated regarding glass fibre fabrics from Egypt.

According to the report, by 30 June 2022, the European Union has in total of 23 countervailing duty measures targeted to 7 trade partners, almost half of which are against  China’s various industrial goods such as iron, steel, glass fire, solar glass, tyres.
