Singapore mainly imports fresh fish, frozen fish, fish fillets, processed fish, shrimp and crab, molluscs. In the first quarter of 2022, Fresh fish (HS 03010) is $7.01 million USD, decreased 0 .8%, Frozen fish (HS 0303) is $35.5 million USD, increased 39.7%, Fish fillets, chilled or frozen fish meat (HS 0304) is $29.9 million USD, increased 6.7%, Processed fish (HS 0305) is $10.9 million USD, increased 12.8%, Shrimp, crab, crustacean seafood (HS 0306) is $48.03 million USD, increased 6.6%, Molluscs fish (HS 0307) ) is 22.8 million USD, decreased 3.5%.
Viet Nam is one of the top 10 seafood exporters to Singapore (8.45% of the market share), but compared to the first quarter of 2021, Viet Nam has dropped from 4th place to 6th place (according to data provided from Vietnam Trade Office in Singapore), the first quarter of 2022 Singapore's seafood imports (HS03) from Vietnam is $16.8 million USD, increased 10.5%; According to statistic of Viet Nam Customs, in the first quarter of 2022, the seafood import is $21 million USD, increased 11%. Vietnam's main products exported to Singapore include fish fillets, chilled or frozen fish meat (HS code 0304) is $8.1 million USD, increased 6.65%; Processed fish (HS 0305) is $3.2 million USD, increased 41.01%; Shrimp, crab, crustacean seafood (HS 0306) is 2.8 million USD, decreased -3.34%.
In general, Singapore's seafood market share is divided equally because each country has its own export strengths, for example, Malaysia and Indonesia are strong in shrimp, crab, and fresh fish; Norway and Spain are strong in irrigated and chilled fish products; Japan has advantages in frozen fish and aquatic life; China has advantages with mollusc aquatic products; Vietnam has an advantage with frozen fish fillets and raw processed fish (ground, sliced).
Relating to the food hygiene and safety and seafood quality in Singapore, the Singapore Food Authority (SFA) still regularly maintains inspection and sampling for imported seafood shipments. There are many competitors of Viet Nam such as Malaysia, Norway, Japan, China and Indonesia, there is such a challenge for Viet Nam because the quality of products of these countries is relatively good.
