FSSAI announces first regulatory standard for Basmati rice
On January 12, 2023, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) issued standard regulations for basmati rice (including brown basmati rice, milled basmati rice, brown basmati rice and parboiled basmati rice) of India. India, aims to establish fair practices in basmati rice trade and protect consumer interests, both domestically and globally. These standards will be enforced from August 1.
According to these standards, basmati rice must have the characteristic natural aroma of basmati rice and be free of artificial colors, glazing agents and artificial fragrances. These standards also stipulate various identification and quality parameters for basmati rice such as the average size of the grains and their elongation rate after cooking, maximum limits of moisture, amylose content , uric acid, defective or damaged grains and incidental presence of other non-basmati rice, etc. .

As a high-quality rice and priced higher than non-basmati rice, basmati rice is susceptible to adulteration in various forms to achieve economic benefits. Therefore, to ensure supply of genuine standard basmati rice to the domestic and export markets, FSSAI has announced that regulatory standards for basmati rice have been formulated through extensive consultations with various agencies. relevant government agencies/agencies as well as other relevant parties.
Basmati rice is a premium variety of rice grown in the Himalayan foothills of the Indian subcontinent and is widely known for its long grain size, smooth texture and inherent unique aroma and flavor. Basmati rice is popular in Europe and the Middle East.
